~Chapter One~
Hello, my name is Dean Moore. I am 12-years-old and attend New Richmond Middle School. People describe me as friendly and childish, but I don't know if I really am. I guess sometimes it’s because they will talk about things and think it’s ridiculous if I have no clue what they mean. I mean, do I? I live with my dad. He works at a business, but I am not exactly sure of what… He's kind, but I think he works too hard. There are a lot of times that he isn’t home or he comes home late. Where's my mom? She passed away. I was very young when she died. I still miss her and love her dearly. Even though I was young when she passed, I still cherish memories with her. And finally, I can’t forget my older sister. Her name is 'Katrina'. She attends New Richmond High School. She and I have a good relationship together. She is always concerned about me. She seems to fight a lot with my friend though…
October 1996
It was bright and early in the morning. It wasn't cold outside even though it was still early fall. The school year had just started, not too long back in late August, and everything
was just doing fine. Dean was in the kitchen and was preparing breakfast, he had just prepared his lunch for school.
"You're up early." Dean's dad, Paul said as he came into the kitchen.
"Yeah, I know. I had to get up early to make breakfast, but I wanted to also prepare my lunch for my school field trip today." Dean said and puts some pancakes on a plate. He takes the plate over to the table and sits them down. Dean's dad sits down and starts eating the pancakes. Dean sits a glass down on the table and was pouring milk into it.
"You don't have to make breakfast all the time." Dean's father said, but Dean just smiled.
"You work too hard and I think you deserve this. Besides, I got so excited about my school filed trip that I ended up waking up early." Dean said and then sit the milk jug on the table. He got out two other glasses and sits them on the table to pour milk into them. He then put the milk jug back into the fridge and went back to making more pancakes.
"If Katrina isn't down here in ten minutes, you should wake her up. She needs to eat breakfast too."
"Okay." Dean says and was putting more pancakes onto the two separate plates near him. When Dean was finished with all the cooking, he put the plates on the table and sat down, and began to eat. Dean's dad gets up and puts his dishes into the sink.
"I have to go to work. I have an important meeting that I have to attend to today. I might be out later than usual. Alright?"
"I understand. Don't worry. I'll have the dishes cleaned when I come home from school."
"Be careful on your field trip." Dean's dad said and left out the door when he got his briefcase. Dean was slowly eating his food as he sat there. A vision just came to his mind. He saw a little girl and a monster about to attack her. Everything around looked blurry and the only two he could clearly see was the girl and the monster. The little girl screamed. Dean snapped back into reality.
"W-What was that?!" He asked himself confused. He had never ever seen anything like that before. “Did I pass out at the table?” He wondered.
Katrina was awake getting ready for school. She had gotten dressed and came down the steps and into the kitchen. She sits her backpack down and sits down at the table on the opposite side of Dean. She stared at Dean who looked as if he saw a ghost or something. The impression on his face looked like he was shocked, but at the same time scared.
"What's the matter?" Katrina asked her younger brother.
"I…I thought I….Well…" Dean didn't want his sister to think he was crazy. "It's nothing." Dean wanted to believe that maybe he just passed out for a second. But he was actually not sure what he had seen. He wanted to try to forget it and think about his field trip instead. "I have my field trip today."
“I know. You'd better be careful out there."
"I should be fine. It's a museum. What could possibly hurt me there?" Dean asked her and chuckled a little. Katrina didn't reply as he made a good point. "One of my classes wants us to learn about the ancient medieval times and decided to take this whole day of school to do so. I am so excited to go!"
"You'd better be good in there, and don't goof off with your friend Vikki. I swear he’s trouble."
“I won't." Dean and Katrina finished up their breakfast, then put their dishes into the sink and left for the bus stop, not saying a word to each other. The bus came moments later, and they both got on the bus. Dean was confused about why he didn't see his friend anywhere as he sat down by his sister. "Where's Vikki?" Dean asked.
"Maybe the little mouse got sick? Or maybe he has diarrhea." Katrina guessed and then laughed. "I am so glad he isn't on the bus today." Katrina didn't seem to get along very well with Vikki. Dean and Vikki had been friends for many years. Since they were both young. Dean met him when he was about five. Vikki actually lived next door. For some reason, Katrina and Vikki didn’t seem to get along. It wasn’t always like this in the past, but eventually it started happening over time. Now it’s like they both always insult each other practically every day.
"I should've knocked on his door to see if he was coming today or not." Dean said and looked out the window sighing. “He didn’t seem like he was too excited about this field trip. I hope he didn’t skip school just because of it.”
As soon as Dean got to school, his class along with the whole 7th grade was going on the field trip. They all were going on to school buses and were getting ready to leave the school. Dean happened to see his friend Vikki when he went on the school bus. He sat down beside him.
Vikki is actually named 'Victor'. He's been my friend since I was five. He doesn't get along too well with my sister and has a little attitude. Also, he sometimes says mean things…
"Why didn't you ride the bus this morning?" Dean asked.
"Because I didn't want to see your butt ugly older sister that looks like a chimney collapsed on her." Vikki replies and laughs a little.
"That's a bit harsh, isn't it?" The school bus began to drive and take off out of the school lot.
"What's so harsh about the fact that I hate your fat ugly older sister? She is so funny looking that I bet it took twelve months to make her."
"I don't understand?" Dean was confused about what Vikki was talking about, he decided to change the subject.
"I wonder what they have in this museum. Do you think they'll let us look at dinosaurs?" He was trying to get Victor to laugh to make it seem like he couldn't remember where they were going on their class filed trip.
"What are you stupid? We're going to be looking at dumb medieval crap. Nothing to do with dinosaurs. They didn't use dinobutts out in the war." Vikki rudely answers Dean.
"Hey, I like dinosaurs." It was true, Dean had some dinosaur figurines in his bedroom. Even a bed set of dinosaurs.
"Dinosaurs are for babies." Vikki laughed. Dean and Victor didn’t speak to each other the rest of the bus ride. It seems like a long draggy ride but they eventually all made it to the museum.
"Alright, everyone find a partner and go look for something to research about. I want you to write a page long about the equipment and information regarding the war in medieval times." The teacher said. She was a lady with long hair.
“Please add details of why they used this equipment.”
"Mrs. Layden, why must we have to look at these stupid things for class? Girls don’t do war. Only boys do." A girl with shoulder length hair asked. Dean overheard. He stared over.
"Just do it or you'll get an F." Mrs. Layden said and walks away. Dean looked over at Vikki.
"What do you want to look at?" Dean asked.
"Is there any swords to cut the breast off Mrs. Layden for taking us here? She’s such a bitch!" Vikki asked.
"Ew, Vikki. Don't talk like that." Dean and Vikki teamed up as partners.
They both went inside the museum building, walked passed some mannequins, and saw weird fashion on them. Then they went down by the sword section. They walked down by a glass protector over a sword. The sword looked quite old, and staring at it made Dean feel awkward. "Why does that seem… so…" Dean couldn't put his thoughts into words about the sword, but something about it, made him feel connected.
It was as if Dean had seen this sword from somewhere before. It felt familiar to him. Like this was something he had seen in the past, before, for some strange reason.
"Why are you staring at that rusty junk? It looks like crap." Vikki asked. Dean couldn't keep his eyes off the sword. Still drawn to it. Dean happened to turn and look over at a stand next to the display of the sword. It had some writing on it.
"This sword was believed to be used by a male in medieval times. It was believed he slayed monsters with it, but it isn't known to be true or false, although it has been noted that it might have been used in the war. There is an incantation used for this when it was found buried with the sword. Speaking it out did nothing, though. The incantation says, "Oh thee, mighty thee, use these swords, bows, and weapons to slay the monsters that try to take over the world with the Gods and Goddesses." Saying that sparked a light. Everything had just frozen in motion.
Everyone in the room and the time on the clock has stopped. “How can that be?” Dean asked himself. “Why is it like everything is frozen?” Dean panicked. "W-What's going on?!" Dean asked, confused. Vikki turned and looked at Dean.
"What did you do?!" Vikki asked Dean. Everything was like it was stopped in time. Not too long later, the sword was the only thing with motion. It lit up in the display. A figure began to form in front of Dean and Vikki. Wings and then the wings opened to reveal what it was. It was a man.
The bright light has stopped, and everything appeared the same as it was, just not in motion. Still, time seemed frozen. The man who appeared was staring straight at Dean and Victor, but mainly at Dean.
"W-Who are you?!" Dean asked, confused. He wasn't sure if he felt scared or not, but mainly he felt confused. The man did not answer at first. He looked at Dean and then over at Vikki a few times. He then looks back at Dean.
"So, you've finally been reincarnated?" The man smiles at Dean.
"Huh?" Dean didn't follow the man at what he was saying.
"You better not be trying to pick up my friend, Dean. You hear me you wacko?!" Vikki snaps at the man with the wings.
"No. I'm not. But I am surprised to see both of you again. It's been years. Too long perhaps" The man with the wings appears, the sword that was in the display glass, into his hands and hands it out to Dean. "You need this again. To battle monsters as you have done in the past."
"What? I don't get what you mean? Are you dressing up for Halloween?" Dean asked.
"I can tell you forgot your past memories. But that won't matter. They will come back hopefully. But stare at this sword. Hold it. It might bring you some memories of what you did before." The man tries to hand the sword to Dean.
"Don't accept that from that ugly winged freak. He might be trying to trick you. Heck, he might be trying to get you in trouble with the police! Hello?! Like this is robbing a museum!" Vikki tells Dean, but he ignores him and takes the sword. Foosh! As soon as he took it, a gust of wind blew around him, but it didn’t last long it eventually stopped. Holding the sword was kind of heavy for Dean, but he felt something familiar as he held it.
"I held this before. I know I did. But… I just can't remember…" Dean thought to himself, he looked at the winged man. "What do you want me to do?"
"Monsters is coming back out from hiding. They want to sacrifice humans in order to bring their Sea God to earth." The winged man explains to Dean. "You mustn't tell anyone of this." The winged man appears with another sword and makes Vikki take it.
The same thing happened to Dean that happened to Victor once he held the sword. Foosh! A gust of wind blew around but stopped few moments just after.
"I don't want this dumb thing! Did you steal this from the exhibit, too?! Are you crazy?! Are you trying to get us both in trouble?!" Vikki glares at the man.
"There is no time. Time will resume soon, and you two need to hurry. There's a little girl who is outside, and a monster will try to kill her. Can you protect her?" The winged man asked.
"Huh? That sounds familiar, like I saw that happening, but I thought I dreamed it." Dean was confused about what was going on. Was it a dream, or not?
"You two need to get a move on!" The winged man grabbed them both and disappeared with them. He appeared with them outside, and time resumes back with everything in motion again. He lets them go.
"Why did you kidnap me?!" Vikki yells at the man. "Are you some freak that preys on young boys?!”
"Where's my dolly I dropped? Dolly?" A little girl said. She was rather small. She looked like a toddler, around the age of two years old. She was walking alone.
Over in the packing lot, a woman was shouting.
"Where are you?! Chelsea?!" She shouts. Dean looked at the little girl and saw a monster with big, large things not too far from her. It had pointy ears with bones sticking out from the edges of the ears, and horns on top of its head. The creature's fur was a gray color, and its eyes appeared to be red.
The creature was heading towards the little girl from charging in the air.
"Watch out!" Dean shouts.
